Guacaholics anonymous

Over here at chez le sprout we practice baby-led weaning.

Baby-led weaning (def.): (1) The epitome of lazy parenting, only with a fancy name.

We have discovered that the sprout is quite fond of guacamole. So when the dude said he wanted to make tacos for supper I thought, score! Not only did I not have to make supper, but it was an excuse to make guacamole.

Yes, we eat guacamole on our tacos. We also only ever eat soft shelled tacos. We also put grated carrots on our tacos. Okay, we are admittedly a bit odd.

Baby-led weaning (def.): (2) Hand baby food. Sit back. Take pictures.

In an attempt to get more guacamole in the sprout's mouth and less on the floor (or flung across the table...) we started making guacamole sushi rolls. These are really easy.

(1) Make guacamole. Take the fruit of one avocado, the juice of one lime, 1/4 of a small onion roughly chopped, salt and pepper. Combine in a food processor until well blended and smooth.

(2) Rip off a piece of tortilla and coat said piece of tortilla in guacamole.

(3) Roll up said piece of guacamole covered tortilla.

(4) Hand food to baby.
(5) Take pictures

Avocados were harmed in the making of this blog post but it was all in the name of tastiness!

  1. We eat guacamole on tacos, or any mexican like dish we have...I don't find it weird. We do prefer hard shells, or my homemade soft though ;) I don't like store bought flour tortilla's and have a hard time finding the corn ones.

I like your carrot idea, I may steal, the more veggies the better :D Cute pictures!

  2. Thanks :) Glad we're not the only odd ones!

I agree that homemade tortillas are definitely better!

  3. Is it hard to make homemade tortillas? I've never tried before.

The sprout looks like he's really enjoying his dinner :) I need to find a bib like that, my daughter is way too messy for the fabric ones we currently have!

  4. It is actually pretty easy to make tortillas. Not quite as easy as a trip to the grocery store tho...

    300g/10oz unbleached white flour
    1 1/2 tsp salt
    1 1/2 tsp baking powder
60g/2oz lard (ya, I substitute vegetable shortening)
    225ml/8fl-oz hot water

Combine flour, salt and baking powder in a bowl. Mix is lard (shortening). Add the hot water and mix lightly to a soft, but not runny, dough. Rest 20 minutes.

Divide dough into 12 pieces, mould into balls, cover with a tea towel, and rest. On a floured surface flatten dough balls and roll out with a rolling pin until at least 6 inches in diameter and very thin.

Heat a dry fry pan over high heat. Slip each tortilla on to the pan one at a time, cooking on both sides and flipping when they start to bubble (~1 min). Stack cooked tortillas in a tea towel and wrap to keep warm. Serve immediately or let cool, wrap in tinfoil and reheat in the oven when needed.

    :)

  6. Let me know how it turns out! I suspect your kids will be a little tidier with the guacamole than mine is, Kenzie!

  8. I make my own guac as well. But I never thought to put it in a tortilla for Courtney. I'll have to give this a try and see what she thinks!
